Minecraft Level.dat Reader
Choose the level.dat file from your world folder to see its seed, game version, world spawn and spawn chunks. It works for Java and Bedrock worlds, and the file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
The file is read in your browser and never uploaded. Java 26.x keeps the seed in data/minecraft/world_gen_settings.dat, so select that file together with level.dat (hold Ctrl or Shift).
Where is the level.dat file?
| Edition | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Java | .minecraft/saves/<world name>/level.dat (open the folder from the world's Edit menu) |
| Bedrock (Windows) | %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds\<world id>\level.dat |
| Server | The world folder named in server.properties (level-name) |
Make a copy before you open it with other tools. This page only reads the file.
What does the reader show?
It shows the seed (copy it or open it on the seed map), the game version the world was last saved with, the world spawn and the game mode. The spawn chunk area uses the default radius of 2 chunks, a 5 × 5 chunk square around the spawn chunk, and names the region file (r.X.Z.mca) that holds it.
Java and Bedrock files
Java stores level.dat as gzip-compressed NBT. Bedrock uses an 8-byte header followed by little-endian NBT. The reader detects the format on its own. In Java 26.x the seed is no longer inside level.dat: it is in data/minecraft/world_gen_settings.dat, so select both files at once.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the seed of my world?
Open the world's level.dat in this reader. The seed is shown in the table. In-game you can also type /seed if cheats are on or you are a server operator.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is read by your browser and stays on your device.
Does it work for Bedrock worlds?
Yes. We tested it with a world made by the official Bedrock Dedicated Server 1.26.52.3 and a world from the official Java 26.3 server.
Why does it say the file is invalid?
Pick the file named exactly level.dat, not level.dat_old or a .mcworld archive. For a .mcworld, unzip it first.
