Where do strongholds spawn?
Strongholds are underground in the Overworld and can sit below any Overworld biome. In Java Edition there are exactly 128 of them, placed in eight rings around the world origin (X 0, Z 0). The first ring is the closest, so most players only need one of its three strongholds.

We ran our engine on 1,000 random seeds (Java 26.3) and measured how far the nearest strongholds is from world spawn, searching up to 25,000 blocks away.

How to find strongholds without a seed map
- Throw an eye of ender: it flies toward the nearest stronghold. Walk that way and throw again.
- When the eye flies down instead of forward, you are right above the stronghold. Dig down there.
- Start from near the world origin: the first ring is closest, between 1,280 and 2,816 blocks out.
- Use the stronghold finder with your seed to get the coordinates and skip most of the eyes of ender.

The portal has 12 frames. Each frame has a 10% chance to already contain an eye, so you usually need fewer than 12.
What is the command to find a stronghold?
Use /locate structure minecraft:stronghold in Java Edition.
Does the stronghold finder work for Bedrock?
Not yet. Bedrock places strongholds differently, so our Bedrock mode shows biomes only.
