How to Find Trial Chambers
Updated 2026-09-27 · MC Seed Maps
The fastest way to find trial chambers is to put your seed into our trial chamber finder, which lists the nearest ones with coordinates, then dig down to about Y -20 at that spot. Without a seed tool, buy a trial explorer map from a journeyman cartographer villager or explore deep caves until you see walls that look built rather than natural.
Where do trial chambers spawn?
Trial chambers are underground structures in the Overworld. According to the Minecraft Wiki, they generate between Y -40 and Y -20, and most of the rooms end up between Y -20 and Y 0. So even the "high" parts of a trial chamber are usually below sea level and deep in stone and deepslate.
They can appear under every Overworld biome except the deep dark. The structure's starting point is never inside a deep dark biome, although some rooms may cut into one.
| Fact | Value (Java Edition, from the wiki) |
|---|---|
| Dimension | Overworld |
| Generation height | Y -40 to Y -20 |
| Where most rooms sit | Y -20 to Y 0 |
| Biomes | All Overworld biomes except the deep dark |
| Placement | One per 34×34 chunk region, at a random spot inside it |
| Structure ID | trial_chambers |
How far apart are trial chambers?
The world is split into a grid of regions that are 34 by 34 chunks (544 by 544 blocks), centred on X 0, Z 0. Each region gets exactly one trial chamber at a random location inside it.
That has two useful results. First, you are never far from one: wherever you stand, there is a trial chamber in your region and more in the regions around you. Second, "random location inside the region" means two chambers in neighbouring regions can end up close together or far apart. Guessing is slow; calculating is fast.
How do I find trial chambers with a seed map?
Because placement follows fixed rules, a tool can work out where chambers should be from your seed and version. Here is the quickest route on MC Seed Maps:
- Get your seed. On Java Edition, type
/seedin chat and click the number to copy it. - Open the trial chamber finder, paste the seed and pick your Java version.
- Enter your current X and Z. The finder lists the nearest trial chambers, each with a
/tpbutton and a small map. - Optional: open the full seed map, turn on the trial chambers layer and see the chambers next to biomes and other structures. Click a marker to copy a
/tpcommand, and mark chambers as visited once you have cleared them. - Confirm the position in a test world before a long trip (see below).
Positions come from world generation using the open-source cubiomes library, so they are predictions. Terrain can stop a structure from generating in rare cases. Java 26.3 support is labelled Verified: it passed our in-game tests.
How do I confirm a trial chamber with /locate?
On Java Edition, open a copy of your world with cheats on and run:
/locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers
The game replies with the nearest chamber's X and Z (the Y shows as ~, because /locate ignores height for structures) and the distance in blocks. The coordinates are clickable in chat. The command needs permission level 2, which in singleplayer means cheats must be on.
If /locate and the trial chamber finder agree, you can travel in your real world with confidence.
How do I find trial chambers without a seed map?
You have two in-game options.
Trial explorer maps. Journeyman-level cartographer villagers sell trial explorer maps for 12 emeralds and a compass. The wiki notes that the map always points to the nearest trial chamber. This is the most reliable method in pure survival, but it needs a village with a cartographer that has reached the right level.
Caves. Trial chambers are buried, but large caves sometimes cut through them. The wiki notes that exposed caves near a chamber often show strange, unnatural shapes. If you are exploring caves around Y -20 to Y 0 and see straight walls, corridors or patterned blocks where you would expect rough stone, dig toward them.
Tips for digging down to a known position:
- Stand on the X and Z the finder gave you, then dig a staircase instead of a straight shaft so you do not fall into a cave or lava.
- Most rooms sit between Y -20 and Y 0, so start watching the walls once you pass Y 0.
- Bring torches or other light and some blocks to seal openings behind you.
What is inside a trial chamber?
Trial chambers are built around combat challenges and rewards you cannot get elsewhere.
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Trial spawners | Only generate in trial chambers; they release waves of mobs you must defeat |
| Vaults | Hold rewards you unlock with trial keys |
| Ominous vaults | A harder version with their own exclusive rewards |
| Breezes | A mob that only spawns in trial chambers; drops breeze rods |
| Breeze rods | Used to craft wind charges and the mace |
| Heavy core | Only comes from vaults; the other part of the mace |
If your goal is a mace, you need both a heavy core from a vault and breeze rods from breezes, so plan to clear more than one room.
Are trial chambers in the same place on Java and Bedrock?
The wiki lists trial chambers as one of the only structures that generate in the same locations on Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Most other structures do not match between editions, which is why our Bedrock seed map shows biomes only for now.
Our trial chamber finder calculates Java positions. If you play Bedrock, treat those positions as a lead and always confirm them in-game with /locate in a test world first.
Quick checklist
- Trial chambers are in the Overworld, between Y -40 and Y -20, with most rooms from Y -20 to Y 0.
- Every biome except the deep dark can have one; there is one per 34×34 chunk region.
- Fastest method: paste your seed into the trial chamber finder and use the
/tpbutton or dig down at the listed X and Z. - No seed tool: buy a trial explorer map from a journeyman cartographer.
- Confirm with
/locate structure minecraft:trial_chambersbefore a long trip. - For other targets, the structure finder covers more structure types.
Frequently asked questions
What Y level are trial chambers at?
The Minecraft Wiki says trial chambers generate between Y -40 and Y -20, with most of their rooms ending up between Y -20 and Y 0.
What biome do trial chambers spawn in?
Any Overworld biome except the deep dark. The starting point of the structure cannot be in a deep dark biome, but other parts of it can reach into one.
How do I get a trial explorer map?
Journeyman-level cartographer villagers sell them for 12 emeralds and a compass. The map always points to the nearest trial chamber.
Are trial chambers in the same place on Java and Bedrock?
According to the wiki, trial chambers are one of the few structures that generate in the same locations on both editions. Our finder currently calculates Java positions.
How do I check a trial chamber position with a command?
On Java Edition, run /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers in a test world with cheats on. It needs permission level 2.
