How to Find an Ancient City
Updated 2026-09-27 · MC Seed Maps
Ancient cities generate only in the deep dark biome at Y -51, and the deep dark usually sits under mountains, so the quickest way to find one is to enter your seed in our ancient city finder and dig down at the listed coordinates. Without a seed tool, go to a big mountain range and explore the deepest caves beneath it until you find sculk.
Where do ancient cities spawn in Minecraft?
Ancient cities are large underground structures in the Overworld. The Minecraft Wiki says they generate only in the deep dark biome, at Y -51. Two cities cannot overlap, but they can generate right next to each other.
The deep dark itself sits deep underground in the deepslate layer and sometimes reaches up into stone. It forms most often under mountain areas with low erosion.
| Fact | Value (from the wiki) |
|---|---|
| Dimension | Overworld |
| Height | Y -51 |
| Biome | Deep dark only |
| Size | About 220 blocks across on each horizontal axis |
| Structure ID | ancient_city |
| Main danger | The warden |
Which surface biomes have a deep dark under them?
Knowing what is above the deep dark helps you guess where to dig. The wiki lists the mountain biomes where it generates most often, and the places where it almost never appears.
| Deep dark is common under | Deep dark is almost never under |
|---|---|
| Jagged peaks | Rivers |
| Frozen peaks | Oceans |
| Stony peaks | Windswept biomes |
| Groves | Swamps |
| Snowy slopes | Mangrove swamps |
So a wide mountain range is a good sign, while an ocean or a swamp is not worth digging under. The deep dark is also the only Overworld biome where lava lakes cannot appear, and no regular mobs spawn there. The warden is the only hostile mob that spawns naturally in it.
How do I find an ancient city with a seed map?
Ancient city positions come from your seed and version, so a tool can calculate them before you start digging. On MC Seed Maps:
- Get your seed. On Java Edition, type
/seedin chat and click the number to copy it. - Open the ancient city finder, paste the seed and pick your Java version.
- Enter your current X and Z. The finder lists the nearest ancient cities with a
/tpbutton and a small map for each. - Optional: open the seed map, switch on the ancient city layer and compare the cities with the mountain biomes above them. Click a marker to copy a
/tpcommand and mark cities you have looted as visited. - Confirm with
/locatein a test world (see below), then travel in your real world.
Positions are predictions based on world generation from the open-source cubiomes library. Terrain can occasionally stop a structure from generating. Java 26.3 support is labelled Verified: it passed our in-game tests.
How do I confirm an ancient city with /locate?
On Java Edition, open a copy of your world with cheats on and run:
/locate structure minecraft:ancient_city
The game shows the X and Z of the nearest city (the Y appears as ~, since /locate ignores height for structures) and how far away it is. You can click the coordinates in chat. The command needs permission level 2.
Because the city sits at Y -51, dig a staircase down at the X and Z you get. Stop regularly to listen and look: the moment you break into sculk, slow down.
How do I find an ancient city without a seed map?
It takes longer, but you can do it in pure survival:
- Pick a big mountain range. The deep dark is most common under jagged, frozen and stony peaks, groves and snowy slopes.
- Go deep. Follow large caves down into the deepslate layer. You are aiming for Y -51.
- Look for sculk. Large patches of sculk with sculk veins around them mean you are in the deep dark. Sculk sensors, shriekers and catalysts also appear there.
- Watch for built blocks. Gray wool floors, deepslate blocks, soul lanterns and candles mean you have reached the city itself.
If you find the deep dark but no city, keep exploring the biome. The city only generates inside it, but not every deep dark area has one close by. This is where the ancient city finder saves hours.
What is inside an ancient city?
An ancient city is a huge structure built around a central palace with long corridors. The wiki highlights several things you will not see elsewhere.
| Feature | What to know |
|---|---|
| Portal-like frame | Made partly of reinforced deepslate, which you cannot obtain in Survival |
| Wool floors | Gray wool with blue, light blue and cyan rugs that reduce vibrations |
| Sculk shriekers | Much more common than in the normal deep dark |
| Hidden basement | Rooms with redstone under the city centre |
| Chests | Echo shards, disc fragments, armor trims and golden apples, including enchanted ones |
Ancient cities are also one of only two places where sculk sensors generate naturally.
How do I stay safe from the warden?
The warden is the big risk. It comes out of the ground when sculk shriekers have been triggered enough times; the wiki says a warden emerges once four shrieker warnings have gone off. It also gives nearby players the Darkness effect.
Ways to lower the risk:
- Sneak whenever you can and avoid running over sculk sensors.
- Stay on wool floors and rugs, which were placed to dampen vibrations.
- Plan a route around shriekers before you start looting.
- Keep an escape route and some blocks for quick walls.
Are ancient cities in the same place on Bedrock?
Our tools do not calculate Bedrock structure positions. For most structures, the same seed places them differently on Bedrock, so our Bedrock seed map shows biomes only. If you play Bedrock, confirm any city position in-game in a test world before you commit to a long dig.
Quick checklist
- Ancient cities are only in the deep dark, at Y -51.
- The deep dark is most common under large mountain ranges and almost never under oceans, rivers or swamps.
- Fastest method: the ancient city finder, then dig a staircase down.
- Confirm with
/locate structure minecraft:ancient_citybefore a long trip. - Sneak, stay on the wool and avoid shriekers to keep the warden away.
Frequently asked questions
What Y level are ancient cities at?
The Minecraft Wiki says ancient cities generate at Y -51, inside the deep dark biome.
What biome are ancient cities in?
Only the deep dark. The deep dark forms most often under mountain biomes such as jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks, groves and snowy slopes.
How do I avoid the warden in an ancient city?
Move slowly, avoid triggering sculk sensors and shriekers, and walk on the wool floors, which reduce vibrations. According to the wiki, a warden emerges once four shrieker warnings have been triggered.
What is the best loot in an ancient city?
The chests hold items you cannot find anywhere else, including echo shards, disc fragments and armor trims. They can also contain golden apples, including enchanted ones.
How do I check an ancient city position with a command?
On Java Edition, run /locate structure minecraft:ancient_city in a test world with cheats on (permission level 2).
