Where do ruined portals spawn?

Ruined portals spawn in every biome of the Overworld and the Nether except the Deep Dark. In the Overworld they come in variants for deserts, jungles, swamps, mountains and oceans, so they can be exposed, underwater or buried. This finder covers both Overworld and Nether ruined portals.

Good to know	5% are giant portals; the rest are normal size. Some obsidian is replaced with crying obsidian (15% of blocks in Java). The frame is broken: you need extra obsidian to light most of them. Look for netherrack and magma blocks around the frame.

We ran our engine on 1,000 random seeds (Java 26.3) and measured how far the nearest ruined portals is from world spawn, searching up to 2,000 blocks away.

How to find ruined portals without a seed map

Look for patches of netherrack and magma blocks in the landscape; they mark a ruined portal nearby.
Check hillsides and cliffs: mountain variants can sit high up, others are partly buried.
In the Nether, look for obsidian frames with polished blackstone around them.
Use /locate structure minecraft:ruined_portal in a creative test copy of your world to check a spot.

What you find inside

Obsidian frame	Broken, with some crying obsidian. Mine it for obsidian.
Gold blocks	Sometimes placed in the ruin.

Java vs Bedrock

Crying obsidian replaces more of the frame in Bedrock (20%) than in Java (15%). Structure positions differ between Java and Bedrock for the same seed; this finder uses Java generation.
