How to Find a Woodland Mansion in Minecraft

To find a woodland mansion, look in dark forest or pale garden biomes, or enter your Java seed in our woodland mansion finder to get the coordinates of the nearest mansions before you leave home. In a Java test world you can confirm a result with /locate structure minecraft:mansion.

Mansions are worth the long trip. Evokers live inside, and every evoker you kill drops a totem of undying, the item that saves you from death once. You will also find allays locked in jail cells and hidden secret rooms with extra loot.

Where do woodland mansions spawn?

Woodland mansions generate in the Overworld only, and only in a small set of biomes. The Minecraft Wiki and the official Minecraft.net article list these:

The wiki explains that Bedrock can place mansions in those cave biomes in theory, but they rarely appear there because the spawning conditions are hard to meet. In practice, on both editions, look for big dark oak or pale oak forests.

Two more facts make mansions hard to find:

• They are rare inside those biomes. Minecraft.net's dark forest article points out that not every dark forest has a mansion.
• They are often far from world spawn. A trip of thousands of blocks is normal.

If you do not know where the nearest dark forest is, search for it first with our biome finder, then look for a mansion inside it.

How to find a woodland mansion with your seed

For Java Edition, a seed tool is by far the fastest way, because you skip the long search on foot.

1. Type /seed in chat and copy the number. Our guide on how to find your seed shows where to find it on every platform.
2. Open the woodland mansion finder, paste the seed and pick your game version.
3. The finder lists the nearest mansions with X and Z coordinates and a ready /tp command for test worlds.
4. Check the closest result with /locate structure minecraft:mansion in a copy of your world. Positions come from world generation and are predictions, so a quick check before a long trip is worth it.
5. Travel there. For very long trips, the Nether is faster: see how nether portals link for the 8-to-1 rule.

Use seed tools only where they are allowed. Many multiplayer servers ban them.

How to find a mansion without a seed

Use a woodland mansion map. Cartographer villagers trade maps that lead to a mansion, and the wiki says these maps can also be found in the secret chests of abandoned camps (see our abandoned camp guide). One warning from the wiki: the map may not point to the nearest mansion, so be ready for a long walk.

Explore dark forests. Minecraft.net notes that mansions are surprisingly hard to spot in the thick canopy, even though they are huge. Travel along the edge of a dark forest or pale garden, or climb high and look for a big, square, dark wooden building above the trees.

Whichever way you choose, mark the mansion's coordinates (F3 on Java) as soon as you see it.

What is inside a woodland mansion?

A woodland mansion has three floors. The wiki describes a large, dark foyer with a giant staircase to the second floor; the top floor is about half the size of the floors below. Minecraft.net lists libraries, dining rooms, forges, storage rooms, farms, bedrooms, jails and ritual chambers among the rooms.

Mobs

Mob	Where you meet it
Vindicator	Every floor. The first floor only generates vindicator rooms, and some rooms always hold one.
Evoker	From the second floor up, in large rooms together with vindicators.
Allay	Locked in jail rooms, often guarded by a vindicator.
Spiders	From the spawner in the spider room (a secret room).
Other hostile mobs	Any dark room, because the inside is poorly lit.

Vindicators and evokers placed when the mansion generates do not respawn once you kill them, so a cleared mansion stays safer.

Secret rooms

Some mansions hide secret rooms with more valuable loot. The wiki lists eight types:

Attic room	The most common type
Obsidian room	An obsidian shape that hides a diamond block
Spider room	Full of cobwebs, with a spider spawner in the middle
X room	Cobblestone X patterns and a chest
Birch pillar room	Four birch plank pillars
Lava room	The rarest type

The other two types are the clean chest room and the fake end portal room.

To find them, the wiki suggests looking for gaps between rooms on the first floor, checking windows on the second and third floors, or cutting away the roof of the third floor. Minecraft.net also advises looking at the mansion from outside to make sure you explored all of it.

Loot

Most chests hold random loot. Minecraft.net mentions useful early-game resources plus rarer items such as music discs and armor trim templates. A few chests always hold the same thing:

How to get totems of undying

Totems are the main reason most players raid a mansion. Minecraft.net's dark forest article says mansions are typically home to loads of evokers, and evokers are the only source of totems. Its totem article confirms that an evoker always drops a single totem of undying when it dies.

When you take fatal damage while holding a totem in your off-hand, it saves you, removes your status effects and gives you Regeneration II, Fire Resistance and Absorption II. Each totem works once, and it does not protect you from the void or the /kill command.

Tips for fighting evokers:

• Keep moving. Evokers summon fangs that shoot out of the ground and vexes that fly at you. Minecraft.net says they were designed so you cannot just stand behind a shield.
• Listen. Their spells start with a shimmering sound, which gives you a moment to step aside.
• Deal with vindicators first when you can. They hit hard with axes and usually stand near the evoker.

Tips for raiding a mansion

• Bring light. Dark rooms and the dark forest around the mansion can spawn hostile mobs even in the daytime.
• Bring good armor, food and a bow. Vindicators are dangerous at close range.
• Mark your path. Three floors of similar corridors are easy to get lost in.
• Scout first if you can. Write down the coordinates before you go in, and use the /tp command from the mansion finder in a test world to look at the layout from outside.

Java vs Bedrock

Mansions look the same on both editions, but Bedrock allows a few extra biomes (see the table above), and the same seed puts mansions in different places on Java and Bedrock.
