How to Find a Bastion Remnant in Minecraft
Updated 2026-10-31 · MC Seed Maps
To find a bastion remnant, go to the Nether and look for huge black towers outside the basalt deltas, or enter your Java seed in our bastion finder to get the coordinates of the nearest bastions before you leave your portal. In a Java test world you can check a result with /locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnant.
Bastions are worth the trip: they are the only place to find the Netherite Upgrade smithing template, and the treasure room type always has one. They are also full of piglins, piglin brutes and sometimes hoglins, so go prepared.
Where do bastion remnants spawn?
Bastion remnants generate only in the Nether. According to the Minecraft Wiki and the official Minecraft.net article, they appear in every Nether biome except basalt deltas:
| Nether biome | Can a bastion generate? |
|---|---|
| Nether Wastes | Yes |
| Soul Sand Valley | Yes |
| Crimson Forest | Yes |
| Warped Forest | Yes |
| Basalt Deltas | No (a nether fortress generates instead) |
A bastion that starts next to a basalt delta can still stretch into it. Bastions are tall, many-storey ruins of blackstone and basalt, partly buried in netherrack, so from a distance you see dark walls and towers that do not look like natural terrain.
How common are bastions?
The game splits the Nether into square regions. Each region holds either one bastion or one nether fortress, never both, although two structures can overlap near a region border.
| Java Edition | Bedrock Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Region size | 432 × 432 blocks | 480 × 480 blocks |
| Area where the structure can start | 368 × 368 blocks | 416 × 416 blocks |
| Chance the region gets a bastion | 3 in 5 (60%) | 2 in 3 (about 67%) |
That means bastions are more common than fortresses, but they are spread out: you can expect roughly one Nether structure per region, so a bastion can easily be a few hundred blocks away. If you want a fortress instead, use the nether fortress finder.
How to find a bastion with your seed
Wandering the Nether is slow and dangerous. If you play Java Edition, a seed tool is the fastest way.
- Type
/seedin chat and copy the number. - Open our bastion finder, paste the seed and pick your game version.
- The finder lists the nearest bastions with Nether X and Z and a ready
/tpcommand for test worlds. - Confirm the closest result with
/locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnantin a copy of your world. Positions come from world generation and are predictions, so a quick check before a long trip is worth it. - Walk there through the Nether, or build a new portal close to it.
To place that portal, enter the bastion's Nether coordinates in the nether portal calculator to get the matching Overworld position. Our guide on how nether portals link explains the 8-to-1 rule if your portals keep connecting to the wrong place.
Use seed tools only where they are allowed. Many multiplayer servers ban them.
How to find a bastion without a seed
- Build a Nether portal and step through.
- Note which biome you are in. If you see grey basalt pillars and blackstone everywhere, you are in a basalt delta: leave it, because no bastion starts there.
- Travel in a straight line and look for tall, dark brick walls. Crimson and warped forests have thick fog, so slow down and scan.
- When you spot one, mark the coordinates (F3 on Java) before you go in.
You can also run the /locate command if cheats are on. Our /locate command guide lists the syntax and the IDs for every structure.
The four bastion types
Every bastion is one of four types, and each type has the same chance to generate.
| Type | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Bridge | A ruined rampart with a carved piglin face and a broken bridge on a pillar. Hoglins can spawn here. |
| Hoglin stables | Hoglins can spawn here when the bastion generates. |
| Housing units | Living areas for piglins. |
| Treasure room | Gold-filled room with the treasure chest and magma cube spawners. |
Piglins, piglin brutes and hoglins that spawn when the bastion generates do not despawn and do not respawn once you kill them. Clearing a bastion therefore makes it safer for every later visit, although normal Nether mobs for the biome can still wander in.
What loot is in a bastion?
Minecraft.net lists gilded blackstone, the netherite upgrade smithing template, the snout banner pattern, the snout armor trim and the Pigstep music disc as items found only in bastions. The chests can also hold iron, gold, crying obsidian, ancient debris, netherite scrap and netherite ingots.
The chances below are from the Minecraft Wiki loot tables, which list the same values for Java and Bedrock:
| Item | Chest | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Netherite Upgrade smithing template | Treasure | 100% |
| Netherite Upgrade smithing template | Bridge, hoglin stable, generic | 10% each |
| Snout Armor Trim smithing template | Any bastion chest | 8.3% |
| Pigstep music disc | Generic | 5.6% |
| Netherite ingot | Treasure | Possible (one ingot) |
The upgrade template is the reason most players come. Templates are rare, so many players copy one at a crafting table (the template, diamonds and netherrack) before they upgrade. For the netherite itself, read our ancient debris guide, which covers the best Nether Y level and how to find debris with your seed.
Tips for raiding a bastion
- Bring your best armor and weapons. The official Minecraft.net article warns that bastions are guarded by piglins, piglin brutes and sometimes hoglins.
- Pick your target. If you need a template, the treasure room type guarantees one, while every other chest is a 10% gamble.
- Carry blocks and fire resistance. The bridge type has walkways surrounded by lava inside the piglin face.
- Mark the entrance. Bastions are large and many levels tall; a few torches or blocks on your way in help you get out.
- Plan your way home. Save the coordinates and keep your portal location written down, or build a portal next to the bastion with the nether portal calculator.
Java vs Bedrock
The biomes and the four types are the same on both editions, and the loot chances match. What changes is placement: Bedrock uses bigger regions and gives bastions a slightly higher share, so the same seed puts bastions in different places on Java and Bedrock. Our bastion finder uses Java generation; on Bedrock, explore or use /locate in a test world.
Frequently asked questions
Where do bastions spawn in Minecraft?
Only in the Nether, in Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest and Warped Forest. They never generate in basalt deltas.
What is the command to find a bastion?
In Java Edition, stand in the Nether and run /locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnant.
Is a bastion or a nether fortress more common?
Bastions. In Java each Nether region holds one of the two, and a bastion gets 3 in 5 of them. On Bedrock the chance is 2 in 3.
Which bastion chest always has a netherite upgrade template?
The treasure chest in the treasure room type. Bridge, hoglin stable and generic chests each have a 10% chance.
Do piglins in a bastion come back after you kill them?
No. Piglins, piglin brutes and hoglins placed when the bastion generates do not respawn once killed. Normal Nether mobs for the biome can still spawn there.
Can I find a bastion with my seed on Bedrock?
Not with our tool yet. Bedrock uses larger regions, so bastions are in different places than in Java. Our bastion finder uses Java generation.
