What a block ID is

Every block has an ID such as minecraft:oak_planks. Commands use the ID, not the name you see in game. IDs are lowercase with underscores, and the minecraft: prefix is optional in most commands. Use the search to find the ID of a block by its in-game name in your language.

Block states

Many blocks come in several states: a door can be open or closed, a stair can face four ways, and redstone dust has a power level. The States column shows how many different states a block has in total. To place a specific state, add it in square brackets, for example /setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:oak_stairs[facing=east,half=top].

Tags

Tags group blocks that behave alike. #minecraft:logs holds every log, #minecraft:mineable/pickaxe holds the blocks a pickaxe breaks fastest and #minecraft:needs_iron_tool holds blocks that need at least an iron tool to drop. Datapacks and commands such as /execute if block ~ ~ ~ #minecraft:logs use these tags. Choose a group to see only its blocks.

Commands you can copy

/setblock places the block at your position, ~ ~ ~, and /give hands you the item. A few blocks have no item (for example fire or water), so /give will not work for them. Command blocks and the /fill command accept the same IDs.

Where the data comes from

We generated the list from the official Java Edition 26.3 server (its block report and block tags) and the game's own language files for the names. It covers Java Edition. Bedrock uses many of the same IDs but not all of them, so check the ID in game on Bedrock.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a block ID in Minecraft?

Search its name here. The ID column shows the full ID, for example minecraft:deepslate. In game you can also press F3 + H to show item IDs in tooltips.

What is the difference between /setblock and /give?

/setblock places a block in the world. /give puts the block's item in your inventory.

What are block states?

Properties that change how a block looks or works, such as facing, open, waterlogged or age. The States column shows how many combinations a block has.

Are the IDs the same on Bedrock?

Many are, but not all. This list is the Java Edition list.

How many blocks are there in Minecraft?

The Java 26.3 data lists 1,270 blocks, including technical blocks such as air and command blocks.
