How to Find Ancient Debris in Minecraft

Updated 2026-10-30 · MC Seed Maps

To find ancient debris, go to the Nether, dig down to Y 15 or 16 and mine long tunnels, blowing open the netherrack with TNT. If you play Java Edition and know your seed, our ore finder shows the exact ancient debris blocks around you, so you can dig straight to them.

Ancient debris is the only source of netherite, the best gear material in the game. It is rare, it never generates touching air, and it hides inside netherrack, basalt and blackstone, so looking around caves will not find much.

Where does ancient debris spawn?

Ancient debris generates only in the Nether, in every Nether biome, between Y 8 and Y 119. According to the Minecraft Wiki, Java Edition places up to two clusters per chunk:

Cluster Size Height range Spread
Low cluster 0 to 3 blocks Y 8 to Y 24 Most blocks in the middle of the range
Wide cluster 0 to 2 blocks Y 8 to Y 119 Even at every height

Both clusters overlap in the low Nether, which is why the bottom of the Nether has the most debris. The wiki gives Y 16 as the best single level on average. Above Y 24 you only meet the small, spread-out cluster.

Debris can only replace netherrack, basalt and blackstone. Generation avoids air, so in normal terrain you will almost never see it on a cave wall. You have to dig into solid blocks to find it.

What is the best Y level for ancient debris?

Y 15 to Y 16 is the best level to mine at. Press F3 (Java) or turn on coordinates (Bedrock) to see your height.

Mining lower than Y 15 gives you less: the low cluster starts at Y 8, and below that there is no debris at all. Lava pockets appear in the walls at any height, so always carry blocks to seal them.

Method 1: strip mining with TNT

Because debris resists explosions, you can blast away netherrack and keep the debris. This is the fastest way without a seed tool.

  1. Dig a long tunnel at Y 15 in one direction.
  2. Every few blocks, place TNT in a side wall, light it and step back.
  3. Check the hole for brown, spiral-topped blocks.
  4. Mine every debris block you uncover with a diamond or netherite pickaxe.

Ancient debris is also slow to mine on Java Edition, so an Efficiency pickaxe and a Haste beacon help on long trips.

Method 2: find debris with your seed

If you play Java Edition 1.18 or newer, you can skip most of the digging.

  1. Type /seed in chat (it works in singleplayer even with cheats off) and copy the number.
  2. Open our ore finder, paste the seed, choose your version and switch to ancient debris.
  3. Enter the X and Z from your F3 screen in the Nether.
  4. The finder lists every debris block in the 3 × 3 chunks around you with exact X Y Z, sorted by distance.

We tested the finder on the official Java 26.3 server: the results are listed on the ore finder page. A few blocks next to water, gravel or other ores can be wrong, so treat each result as a strong hint and dig to it.

Use your seed only where it is allowed. Many multiplayer servers ban seed tools, and some servers run a different seed for the Nether.

Method 3: loot instead of mining

Bastion remnants are the other way to get netherite. According to the wiki, the treasure room chest in a bastion has a 35% chance (Java) to contain a netherite ingot. Bastions are also the only place you find the Netherite Upgrade smithing template, which you need to turn diamond gear into netherite. The treasure room always has one, and bridge, hoglin stable and generic chests have a 10% chance each.

Bastions are dangerous places to loot, so go well equipped. Find one with the bastion finder, and use the nether portal calculator to place a portal close to it.

How much debris do you need?

Goal Ancient debris Netherite ingots
One netherite item 4 1
Full tool and armor set 40 10

Each debris smelts into one netherite scrap in a furnace or blast furnace. Four scraps and four gold ingots craft one netherite ingot. To upgrade an item, place the upgrade template, the diamond item and the ingot in a smithing table. Enchantments and the item's name stay.

Templates are rare, so copy one before you use it: the wiki says you can duplicate it with seven diamonds, a block of netherrack and the template itself.

Safety tips for debris hunting

  • Carry fire resistance potions. Lava pockets open without warning when blocks around them break.
  • Bring blocks that do not burn, such as cobblestone or blackstone, to seal lava.
  • Do not dig straight down. You can fall into lava; dig in a staircase.
  • Netherite items survive lava. Dropped debris, scrap and ingots float on lava and do not burn, so a fall into lava does not destroy what you mined.

Java vs Bedrock

Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Clusters per chunk Up to 2 Up to 5
Mining time with a diamond pickaxe Slow (about 16 s) Much faster (about 6 s)
Seed-based ore finder Yes, in our ore finder Not supported

The height range is the same, so Y 15 is a good level on both editions. For diamonds in the Overworld, read our best Y level for diamonds guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Y level for ancient debris?

Mine around Y 15 to Y 16 in the Nether. Ancient debris generates from Y 8 to Y 119, but one of its two clusters is concentrated between Y 8 and Y 24, so the low Nether has the most.

How many ancient debris do I need for netherite?

Four. Each ancient debris smelts into one netherite scrap, and four scraps plus four gold ingots craft one netherite ingot. A full set of tools and armor needs 10 ingots, which is 40 debris.

What pickaxe do I need to mine ancient debris?

A diamond or netherite pickaxe. With any other tool the block drops nothing.

Can TNT destroy ancient debris?

No. Ancient debris is immune to normal explosions, which is why players use TNT to blow away the netherrack around it.

Is there an ancient debris finder for my seed?

Yes, for Java Edition 1.18 and newer. Enter your seed and position in our ore finder and switch to ancient debris to see the blocks around you with exact X Y Z.

Is ancient debris the same on Bedrock?

No. Bedrock uses more clusters per chunk and mines debris much faster, so Java tips about counts and our ore finder do not apply to Bedrock.
