How to make a banner in a loom
Craft a banner
6 wool of one colour + 1 stick. That colour is the base.
Open a loom
Put the banner and a dye in the loom.
Pick a pattern
Most patterns need no item. Special ones (like Creeper Charge or Globe) need a banner pattern item.
Repeat
Add one layer at a time, in the order shown here. A loom allows 6 layers in survival.
Banner patterns list
The game has 42 patterns (plus the plain base). 32 need only a dye; the others need a banner pattern item such as Flower Charge, Creeper Charge, Skull Charge, Thing, Globe, Snout, Flow, Guster, Field Masoned or Bordure Indented. Pattern names and items come from the game's own data files.
More than 6 layers
The loom stops at 6 layers in survival. The /give command can add up to 16 layers — the most the banner can hold.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some patterns look simplified?
The preview is our own simplified drawing, and patterns that show game characters (like the Creeper Charge) appear as labels. The command and loom steps give you the real pattern in the game.
Which version is the /give command for?
Java Edition 1.20.5 and newer, where banners use the banner_patterns item component.
